With the release of the Steam Machine Betas, Valve has also made available the Beta version of the Steam OS. This is mostly a “word to the wise” post informing about what you need to know before installing Steam OS Beta on your system and some of the pitfalls that you need to be aware
With another title being added to the already expansive list of EA’s Need for Speed franchise, you could be forgiven for thinking Need for Speed Rivals will be another chip off the old block. However Rivals is the first driving game in a while that really excites me. The Need for Speed franchise really captures
New York city. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps. It’s also the city for the PS4 apparently. Sony chose New York as the site to announce the PS4 back in February and again more recently this week for the launch event for selected press in America. Although we wont see the PS4 in
The start of the next generation is just over a week away and with that comes a whole new set of games. We start from scratch again as we say goodbye to the game collection we have built over the last 5 to 6 years. Of course, there are some games that will come across
Gaming franchises seem to be almost the only way to get mainstream gamers’ attention recently. It’s not hard to see why these sort of titles are appealing to publishers. For instance, 80+ of the AAA titles released this year are sequels or reboots. Likewise, titles like GTA V selling $800M in the first 24 hours,
With Xbox One launching in a couple of weeks, I was curious about the general impression people have about the new Kinect. Apart from the blow-up surrounding the announcement of the Xbox One and the bundled in Kinect 2.0, I haven’t really heard much else, certainly nothing positive about the Kinect leading up to the
With the impending launch of the next generation consoles, the Xbox One and PS4 in November, more and more information on the games in development are coming through. Sources close to the gaming community suggesting the PS4 having more than twice the graphical power of the Xbox One. With games like Need for Speed Rivals,
The Gamery went to EB Expo 2013 and it was a blast! We went to EB Expo 2013 to get the low down on what’s hot in Australian gaming for 2013/2014. Getting in early and being able to get our hands on the Xbox One for the first time was amazing, watching Tom obliterate the guy
After Christian Bale announced to the world that he didn’t want to play Batman any more (Thank the Lord as his voice was terrible) the search was on to find his replacement! I actually let them know that I was keen for the gig and if they needed a Batman I would gladly fill in
The battle for the next generation of gaming begins
Since E3, rumors, speculation and a lot of opinions have been thrown around the internet. It seems there needs to be not a few but several hundred steps back taken and emotion to be removed from the debate. So let’s dive in to the facts… well what I’m hoping are all facts. So let the Xbox One Playstation 4 comparison begin!
Video game publishers seem to be going for broke, literally.
At the moment in the video game industry times are good. But considering some of the statistics floating around these days it’s hard to see this golden age progressing much into the future. If Square Enix, one of the major players in the video game publishing industry at the moment, is coming out stating its latest game, that sold 3.4 million copies in the first month, is a financial failure there isn’t much hope for the future of the AAA industry. These big name titles are, for the most part, the cash cows of the video game industry. One could almost assume these are the too big to fail section in video gaming. Titles like Call of Duty and Halo still make a profit due to their legions of fanatical players. But what about new AAA titles like Dishonored without previous buzz to stand on and these sequel behemoths to compete against? Is this why there is little to no new IP being release, sequel after sequel is all we can expect? Indie developers who self publish or use direct suppliers like Steam and the App Store seem to be the only ones making any money around here, which to me makes no sense as these games go for a pittance compared to a AAA title.
To preface let’s remember what a game is, a virtual rendering of fictional stories that allow people to suspend reality and provide an outlet for actions beyond possibility in reality. So bearing this in mind, why the hell would anyone try to link anything that happens in a game to events in the real world or vice versa? In recent times gaming has taken a lot of flack over a diverse range of topics, some of these accusations have been about very poignant social issues and others are laughable at best. I’ll start with the laughable before going full-blown off topic. PETA is famous for getting attractive people naked with their slogan “I’d rather go naked than wear fur”, which is something I can totally get behind. Something I can not understand much less endorse is the attacking of a video game publishing company (Ubisoft) for a screenshot of a yet-to-be-released game which shows a whale breaking water off the side of a pirate ship. And yes there has been mention of whaling in the game, but I would have thought PETA would be more concerned about the masses of dead virtual people you leave behind, rather than the few virtual whales. This was released by Ubisoft on the +Assassin’s Creed Google plus account:
History is our playground in Assassin’s Creed. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag is a work of fiction that depicts the real events during the Golden Era of Pirates. We do not condone illegal whaling, just as we don’t condone a pirate lifestyle of poor hygiene, plundering, hijacking ships, and over the legal limit drunken debauchery.
The fact that PETA even got attention for bringing this up, let alone the fact that Ubisoft had to put something out there to rebut the argument is more than slightly ridiculous. Unfortunately when looking at gaming and politics you are always going to run into the, “Are violent video games promoting violence?” debate.
Halo 4 will be one of if not the largest AAA title to hit our shelves this year. So if you were a fan of Reach, lets talk about what the differences between the Halo games are. Halo 4 Vs Halo Reach.
There are many game feature that have rather similar characteristics to the Call Of Duty franchise for example, it makes every hardcore Halo 4 diarrhea. the fact the developers have seen the success of the multiplayer features of the COD game and seemingly copied parts of the game, does not seem like the worst idea to try to improve the game overall. However, I feel they have taken the changes to far and way to quickly. Halo fans want to see improvements on what has been done for many years and not change key game play features completely.
